At CFS our goal is to offer a gasket solution that provides the best form, fit and function to achieve its intended use. Often, design and use constraints dictate the need for specific material properties. In other cases, there may be many options from which to choose. CFS is here to assist in that selections process. A high-performance elastomer with exceptional resistance to temperature extremes, silicone rubber gaskets are often chosen due to their excellent resistance to chemicals, water, fire, fungal growth, ozone, heat and aging. Silicone gaskets have outstanding tensile strength, elongation, tear strength, and compression set. The versatility and long service life of silicone make it ideal for a wide variety of gasket applications. The low temperature flexibility of silicone is unmatched by any other elastomer.
A closed cell silicone sponge available in a wide range of densities, it is used for thermal shielding, vibration mounts, press relief pads, environmental cushioning and gaskets and excel in any application requiring UV, ozone and weather resistance. Silicone sponge has a high tensile and tear resistance making it more durable than silicone foam. Another well-known property of silicone sponge is its ability to meet UL 94 requirements such as V0 and below.
PORON® microcellular urethane foam is a preferred material choice for thermal and acoustic insulation, vibration and sound dampening, sealing, gaskets and energy absorption. Poron® foams have excellent compression set resistance and high resilience, providing a gasket seal that performs well over extended use. Poron® is a low out-gassing and flame-retardant material (UL-Listed). It exhibits good chemical resistance and is non-fogging.
A less expensive option to silicone, EPDM is available as a solid or sponge in a variety of densities and durometers (hardness). EPDM gaskets offer strong resistance to UV rays, oxygen, ozone, aging, water and weather. However, it has very poor resistance to petroleum products and many chemicals and EPDM gaskets are often utilized in outdoor applications.
Neoprene is a synthetic rubber with strong tear and compression set resistance often used for cushioning, vibration control and acoustic insulation. It is resistant to ozone, UV rays, oxidation, several petroleum derivatives and dilute acids. However, Neoprene is a poor resistor to aromatic and oxygenated solvents with limited flexibility at lower temperatures. Neoprene gaskets are available in solid or sponge.
Expanded Polypropylene (EPP) is a highly versatile closed-cell bead foam that provides a unique range of properties including outstanding energy absorption, multiple impact resistance, thermal insulation, buoyancy, water and chemical resistance, exceptionally high strength to weight ratio and 100% recyclability. Widely utilized by automotive manufacturers, it is also approved for use in conjunction with food products. EPP does not support microbial growth and can be made sterile with steam cleaning.
A standard, non-asbestos gasket material made from low density cellulose fiber material with high rubber filler content and a nitrile butadiene rubber binder. It provides excellent sealing of oil and water at low flange pressures and is used primarily for engine and transmission pan gaskets, water pumps, and environmental seals. Intended for applications with short duration maximum temperatures up to 350° F.
Fish paper is a fibrous dielectric paper known for its unique combination of strength, ease of forming and punching. It is well-suited for use in the manufacturing of electrical insulation materials, offering high mechanical strength and greater resistance to extreme temperatures than most types of plastic materials. Fish paper is also extremely light – approximately half the weight of aluminum, making it an excellent choice for applications where weight reduction is critical.
Lexan® is the brand name for polycarbonate plastic. It is an excellent thermal insulator, ideal for applications requiring a strong, impact resistant, glass-like surface and is used in applications needing a large temperature service range, excellent electrical properties and dimensional stability. Lexan® is flame retardant and has UL94 V-0 or VTM-O ratings. It is chemical resistant, has excellent dielectric strength and low moisture absorption.
Composition cork is a lightweight and stable material which is a hybrid of cork and rubber such as silicone, nitrile or neoprene. It exhibits excellent compressibility, moisture resistance and anti-vibration characteristics making it popular for consumer product applications. Composition cork gaskets have good oil and fuel resistance, a high degree of compressibility and low lateral flow. It has an inherently high friction value and can withstand extremely high bolting pressures without crushing.
